The Desperate Housewives Season Finale
Desperate Women, Desperate Acts.
What do you expect from the Housewives season finale? Marriages, pregnancies and affairs. Let’s be fair, this is a soap and that is what you should expect when you put the episode on, so there’s really no point in saying why doesn’t it ever change or whining about the repetitive arcs. It’s never gonna change, because that’s what the show is and that’s what it’ll be till its end. So if you’re still going the watch more episodes and then whine about how they never change anything, well, that’s a pretty lame excuse. In fact, I’m going to type it in bold so you guys can remember it: Desperate Housewives was, is and always will be about weddings, pregnancies and affairs.
That out of the way, season three was a big improvement on the last season. Suffering as most shows do (HINT Prison Break) from the second season slump, the writers did a good job of bringing it back. Last year’s twist were handled (and taken care of) very well. Let’s review each housewife’s life over the past year.
Lynette: Lynette is my favorite, so I’m a little biased. She has the hardest life and the most realistic storylines which is ironic since she’s pretty much the only housewife with a successful marriage and a complete family. Earlier in the season they threw the step-daughter and her bitchy mother into the equation and dealt with it in what is easily this season’s best episode. Involving a semi-psychotic jealous wife with a gun and a handful of vary hostages, Felicity Huffman gave her best performance. This season was not nice to her, the restaurant and the almost-affair put a massive strain on her marriage and the cancer didn’t help either. This was her worst year yet and something tells me the next one won’t be very pleasant either. Plus, in the finale we get to find out more about her past and that just made me like her more.
Bree: Not a bad season for Bree. Two-thirds of the season was all about her new husband (a very nice addition but the way), his dead mistress, his evil-mother and his ex-wife. They storyline was easily the most intriguing, however was ended too quickly and then Bree and family disappeared for the rest of the season. I have to mention Andrew though, from being the most hated and disliked character he has transformed into someone different. Someone better? Maybe, but definitely someone very interesting. Seems Marc Cherry’s been borrowing some notes from Rob Thomas, Andrew seems to be mirroring Beaver.
Gabrielle: Eva Longoria’s smoking-hot rack just isn’t enough to keep us interested anymore. Her storylines through out the season are boring and pointless (although not as boring and pointless as Susan’s). Two-episode romances litter this season and bored me. The finale saw her rushing into marriage and almost immediately realizing the ugly, old politician just got his claws into her and won’t be letting go easily. Something tells me, she’s not going to come out of this marriage without her scars, if she ever comes out at all.
Susan: I hate Susan. Every time I watch her I want to shout out at her to stop acting like a 15-year old girl. Notes on pink hearts and setting your future mother-in-law on fire is not something a 40+ year old woman does. Her biggest problem this season (while the other battled with suicide, teenage pregnancies, affairs and cancer) was which handsome, completely-in-love-with-her guy she should marry. Of course, she chooses Mike. So at least the Ross-Rachel dance is over.
Edie: I never counted Edie as a housewife. Neither of the previous seasons really focused on her. This season however, she had her very own arcs. She started a relationship with Carlos (they had to keep him around for something), we got to meet her son and see a side of her we hadn’t seen previously. Of course there was a reason for this and it was a very simple one. In the last few seconds of the season finale, she commits suicide.
So there you have, yet another soapy season of a show that’s slowly losing viewers but quietly gaining a cult audience. Give it a try if you liked the first season, you won’t be disappointed.
