Zombie’s Halloween

Zombie’s remake is one of the visionary ones, you know where a director evolved the movie in their mind when they first see it and wait for an opportunity to remake it, true to their vision. The problem with personal visions is, they often get very self indulgent. Jackson’s Kong ran off to play with his girl toy for long periods of times and Zombie’s Halloween goes out of its way to make sure we know everything that could have gone wrong, went horribly wrong and made Myers into what he’s become. The movie constantly makes excuses for what he’s become and even though Jackson’s humanization of the monster is sweet, Zombie’s fascination with Myers is a little disturbing.

However, in a time where the word “remake” makes you gag (The Fog, The Hitcher and I’m still in denial about the upcoming The Thing remake. You can almost hear Kurt Russell’s career turning over in it’s grave), Zombie does a nice job with the film. I’ve never been a big fan of Carpenter (aside from The Thing, which is the greatest creature feature ever) and I wasn’t a big fan of the original Halloween. I know many will hate me for that, but you have to know where I’m coming from. The original one was great for that generation. It gave the people of the 70s something new, something different: Teenagers having sex and fighting off a deranged masked killer, it broke through the violence and sex barriers. But we were born with slasher flicks all around us. The original didn’t impress me too much and I think the remake is an adequate translation of it. While it may not be a good movie, it’s a decent remake.
